The territory is with no doubt interesting from the point of view of archaeology, and not less from the point of view of speleology. Actually, there are so many gorges and caves on the territory, that this topic merits its own section.
In the 1960's about a dozen of caves were discovered, listed, explored and studied thanks to the good will, courage and an excellent preparation of several groups of speleologists, who alternated each other in the business of unveiling the hidden secrets of Gairo's caves. The results of these speleological studies were then published in a book, enriched with detailed de__Scriptions and numerous images.
Passing by the station of Ussassai, at the altitude of the 108th Km of the railway route just before arriving to Gairo Taquisara, you find the place called Cabu de Abba, where the homonymous cave is situated. Above it other caves are located, such as Sa Grutta de su Coloru, sa Grutta 2a de su Coloru e sa Gruttixedda Cabu de Abba, while slightly to the left the cave sa Grutta de sa Lancia is situated. Continuing rising to the top of the mount, just beneath the nuraghe su Serbissi you'll see a homonymous cave, that crosses the mountain from one slope to another, extending from the territory of Gairo to that of Osini.
Just 150 m south-west of Serbissi, at the altitude of 950 m, the cave sa Grutta ‘e Munserra is located. Turning toward the road, 200 m beyond the trackman's hut, there's a large entrance to Grotta delle Felci. Continuing the way toward Gairo, at a short distance from an abandoned quarry, you'll find a small cave Grutta ‘e is Ossus.
A few minutes' walk from the station of Gairo Taquisara, where you can leave your vehicle, and you reach the cave de Sa Bruvuriera, that dominates the village, the cave Genneua, that has a local name of Sa Grutta Manna and which is located just above, at the base of a huge rock in the same direction as de Sa Bruvuriera; la Grotta del marmo (Marble Cave), visible from the road, is about a hundred meters to the left. Sa Grutta de Perda ‘e Liana should be also mentioned.
